3G Sunset On The Horizon

Cell phone companies announced that the shutdown of third-generation, or "3G," wireless network will be complete by the end of 2022. This shutdown will not occur all at once. It will appear sporadically across the country and on January 1, 2023, the 3G wireless network will cease to exist. 4G service is becoming the default for most devices that are released into the marketplace, for the simple reason that 4G is both faster and more efficient. And now, as the 5G build-out begins, it is getting more and more difficult for the carriers to justify keeping their 3G services operations.

Why does the 3G Sunset affect alarm systems?

Wireless alarm systems communicate via cellular networks like the 3G and 4G networks. Many wireless alarm systems were installed with a 3G compatible GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) device that can only communicate via the 3G wireless network. Therefore, when the 3G network ceases to exist on January 1, 2023, these alarm systems will no longer be able to communicate alarm signals.

Are carbon monoxide (CO) alarms installed and maintained in your home? Often called the invisible killer, CO is an odorless gas created when fuels burn incompletely. The only way to detect CO is with a working CO alarm.

More than 400 people die per year on average in the U.S. from CO poisoning. This doesn’t have to happen. CO deaths are preventable. Follow these safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

Never use a portable generator inside your home, garage, basement, crawlspace, or shed or on your porch. CO can seep into the house through open windows, doors, or any type of vents such as for the dryer, exhaust fans, and even openings into the attic in the roof’s overhang.
Use a portable generator outside only, and place portable generators at least 20 feet away from your house. Use outdoor-rated, long extension cords to run power into your home.
Have your furnace, fireplace, and fuel-burning appliances checked by a qualified professional once every year.
Never burn charcoal inside homes or in semi-enclosed areas.
Don’t leave a car running in the garage.
Install CO alarms on every level of your home and outside each separate sleeping area. CO alarms should have battery backup.
Test CO alarms once a month, and replace CO alarms if they fail to respond correctly when tested.
Know the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion.

If you suspect CO poisoning, or your CO alarm sounds, get outside to fresh air immediately, and then call 911. If you live in an area without access to 911, call your fire department.

1. Don’t let packages pile up on your porch.

If you have a porch full of packages that are left unattended it makes an easy target for porch pirates. Instead have your packages sent somewhere they can be received in person or even held at the post office for you.

2. Boxes can be billboards for burglars.

You just got that new big screen TV hooked up and ready to go, so you drag that box outside to the curb for garbage pickup later that week. All these boxes piled up right outside your home can be a billboard for burglars. Don’t advertise all these new items, wait until the day of trash pick up to put the boxes.

3. Double check those locks.

Burglars love it when we make things easy on them and leaving door or window unlocked is an invitation to them. Even if you’re just going to be out for a few minutes make sure everything is locked up tight.

4. Keep travel plans offline.

This is a big one, in the age of social media there’s nothing we all love more than sharing what’s going on in our life. It might seem harmless to post about a vacation you’re getting ready to go on and you might think you’re being careful, but you never know who is watching.
